Everyday Adventures: A Tale of a Good Day
Her eyes flicked open. She looked around a bit disoriented. She noticed the sun barely poking through the blinds. She also noticed she was in her bed alone. What time was it?
6:30.
A bolt of panic surged through her. Jetting out of bed, she took the 10 steps that separated her room from her sons. As she popped the door open she found the most stunning and beautiful sight of all - a sleeping toddler. In utter disbelief, she part walked part stumbled back to her bed. She laid back down trying to wrap her mind around what had happened. She had gotten her son to sleep at 10 and gone to her bed. She expected to wake up to him walking into her bedroom somewhere around 1 or 2 in the morning as had become the case. She laid there and counted up the hours she had slept last night. She actually needed two hands to count all the hours! She wanted to make the most of it and sleep as long as he was, but she found herself more awake than she could remember feeling in awhile. She didn't know if it was all the extra sleep or the sheer excitement of a full night of sleep, but she was wide awake.
She bounced out of bed and made her way to the coffeemaker. Once that was brewing, she checked on her son again. Still alive. Still out cold. The smile spread across her face as she realized the implications of this moment. She had some time to herself. She could eat something and not have to share. She could drink her coffee while it was hot. Read a book. Watch tv. Sit on the patio. This moment was brimming with so much possibility! She realized she was wasting time thinking of things she could do; better to seize the moment and just pick something. She got herself some breakfast, grabbed a cup of coffee, her journal and her Bible and settled in on the couch.
For the next hour, she ate an uninterrupted breakfast and drank hot coffee. She read chapters of her Bible and wrote pages in her journal. She felt as though she had the best and fullest day already when her son came stumbling into the living room.
Just the first glance of him awake this morning filled her heart with the warmest, giddiest happy that she had ever known. His strawberry blond hair was poking up in all directions. His matching pjs ever looking disheveled and his diaper was obviously ready to be changed. His bright blue eyes danced with adventure and mischief even while he was rubbing the sleepy out of them. He smiled at seeing her and ran to her lap. They spent the next hour snuggling on the couch, talking about the dreams they had last night, reading their daily Bible reading together, and even watching a few cartoons (and for those who might worry, yes she changed his diaper.)
"What do you think about some berries and yogurt for breakfast, Buddy?"
"Gurt!" he said as he ran to the fridge to get it. He grabbed the yogurt and she grabbed the berries and she dished up his breakfast. He ate his breakfast and she drank the rest of her coffee in amicable silence. Once he was done, she told him to grab his shoes because they were going outside.
As had become their summer tradition, they made their way to the 4-wheeler immediately upon going outside. They had both come to love the wind in their hair and the wide open feeling of riding through their little back country neighborhood. They had a route they usually made, which centered around the neighbors that had animals they could see from the road.
"Neigh neigh?" her son said looking up at her as soon as they started down the road.
"Yes baby let's go see the horses."
The neighbors right up the road did not have their horses out today so she decided to take their alternate route that took them by another house that usually had horses out plus chickens and ducks.
"Butta-fyyyyy!" her son kept shouting in excitement.
"Oh such pretty butterflies!" she said.
As she drove on she realized, there were a ton of butterflies out today. More than she had seen in her life at one time in nature. It was like a scene from a movie. The more she drove, the more butterflies took flight and danced around them. Bright yellow, bright green and a vibrant lavender were the colors flashing before her. Tears welled up in her eyes in sheer amazement at the beauty and wonder of it. She stopped the 4 wheeler and turned it off. Yellow butterflies covered the gravel road before her as far as the eye could see. Green and purple butterflies were scattered throughout. She watched one take flight. The bright yellow drifted up past the dark green of the bean field in front of her until it was against the deep blue sky above her. She watched until she couldn't see it anymore for the startlingly white sun shining down on her. She got her son off of the vehicle and placed him in the abandoned road.
"Let's try to catch one," she said grinning at him.
"Catch," he said affirmatively.
And with that they both took off running through the road. As they did, a rainbow of color swirled up and took flight. They laughed and ran harder. It was another 15 minutes of sneaking up on the beautiful butterflies and running through the road before they decided to head back home.
After getting home and taking a nice long nap, her son woke up to his dad being home. As they ran and played through the house, she got dinner ready. They all ate a delicious dinner followed by more playing, snuggles and stories. Her son went to sleep without a fight. She laid into her bed feeling fatigued, but so alive. She thanked God for the glorious day and asked for a chance to do it all again tomorrow.
